Well, on Wednesday we launched the first part of Escapism, and what a positive response we've had. It's been great fun. The project took 2 weeks, and we had a good time making it, but nothing could prepare us for the huge surge in people playing the game and posting about it.Huge Thanks to Graeme, builder of lazylaces.com and unofficial philosophical leader of the world's point-and-click community. He posted a link to the game and, that day, nine and a half thousand people were playing it. So far today, well over seven thousand have played.
And then there's the international gamers, who use Graeme's site as the veritable font of game-related information it's become, prominently displayed on the Favourites button of browsers worldwide. Within two days... here is a list to some of the sites that are already linking to Escapism...
- Japan: himatubu.seesaa.net ... spicybox.blog39.fc2.com...
- France: www.nicosite.net ... la-suite04.skyblog.com
- Brazil: yadayada.hex.com.br
- Netherlands: www.bakje.nl
- Turkish: odaoyunlari.blogspot.com
- English: www.chaffinchshoelace.com ... escapetheroom.blogspot.com ... bsan.org
- And the very interesting TheSwarm... great alternative navigation on this site....
This experiment demonstrates to an extent the power of the internet for independant producers to display their ideas, skills or goods to an international audience, pretty much for free, based on one email to a friendly popular blog. Instantly. One email, and the thing spreads like wildfire ... or a virus ... this is Viral Marketing.
So it's been a very encouraging experience, thanks to everyone who took the time to play, post the game on their sites, and comment. It's great to get such instant feedback, and we'll definitely take your constructive criticism on board. Mike & I are stoked by the reaction on the whole and are gonna get to work... Escapism II will definitely be longer and have more involved puzzle elements. But whether there are ninjas ... you'll just have to wait and see...
